Cycling Around Mount Fuji & the Fuji Five Lakes

Few rides beat pedalling with Mount Fuji filling the horizon. The lakes and towns at its northern foot are the classic place to do it, and e-bikes have made the area accessible to almost anyone.

The Fuji Five Lakes

The Fujigoko — Kawaguchi, Yamanaka, Sai, Shoji and Motosu — sit in a rough arc north-west of the mountain. Kawaguchiko is the most developed and easiest to reach, with rentals, cafes and viewpoints; Yamanakako is the largest and has a full lakeside cycle path.

The best loops

The loop around Lake Kawaguchi (about 18 km) is short, mostly flat and dotted with Fuji viewpoints such as Oishi Park — an easy half-day. Lake Yamanaka's circuit (about 14 km) has a dedicated path and mirror-like Fuji reflections on calm mornings. Confident riders can link lakes on quiet roads, though the connecting stretches roll and sit at altitude.

Bikes and e-bikes

E-bikes are the popular choice here: the area is high (above 800 metres), the air is thinner, and the approaches to the lakes are rolling. City bikes are fine for a single flat lake loop, while road bikes suit riders tackling longer distances or the climbs around the mountain.

Views, seasons and getting there

For the clearest Fuji, ride early in the morning and aim for spring or autumn; winter is cold but often the crispest, while summer can be hazy. Kawaguchiko is reached by direct bus from Tokyo (Shinjuku) or by train via Otsuki. Note that the Fuji Subaru Line toll road up the mountain has restrictions and is not a casual cycling route.
