Taipei is built for casual cycling: a near-continuous network of riverside bikeways lines the Tamsui, Keelung, Xindian and Jingmei rivers, running for well over a hundred kilometres almost entirely car-free. The city's YouBike public share system has thousands of docks at MRT stations and parks and is the easiest way for visitors to grab a bike for an hour or a day.

The classic ride follows the Tamsui River down to the old port town of Tamsui and across the water to Bali, with ferries and cafés along the way. To the northeast, Yilan and the Su-ao coast open up quieter countryside and the start of the east-coast route — all reachable from Taipei by train with a bike.
