Taiwan's east coast is the island's cycling showpiece: Highway 11 runs beside the Pacific from Hualien south to Taitung, while the parallel East Rift Valley route threads rice paddies, hot springs and small towns like Ruisui. It is the scenic heart of the round-island Cycle Route No. 1, and many tourers ride it over several days.

Just inland from Hualien, Taroko Gorge carves a marble canyon along the Liwu River — spectacular but a demanding climb best started early. Touring shops in Hualien and Taitung cater to long-distance riders with road bikes, e-bikes and one-way rentals; note that landslides can close gorge and coast roads after typhoons, so check conditions first.
