Cycling & bike rental in Lake Biwa & Shiga
Lake Biwa, Japan's largest lake, is ringed by Biwaichi — a roughly 200 km National Cycle Route that has become one of the country's signature rides. The full loop is a two-day trip for most riders, but the flatter southern half around Otsu and Moriyama makes an easy day, and the route is signposted with blue arrows the whole way.
Cycle stations at Otsu Port, Maibara and Moriyama rent everything from cross bikes to e-bikes, and Maibara — the only Shinkansen stop in Shiga — is a convenient start for riders arriving from outside the prefecture. E-bikes make the longer stretches manageable, and the mostly gentle terrain suits confident beginners as well as tourers.
