Cycling & bike rental in Tokyo & Greater Kanto
Tokyo is denser and more traffic-heavy than most cycling cities, but it is also flatter than visitors expect, and a rental bike is an easy way to reach corners the trains miss. Riverside paths along the Arakawa and Tama rivers, the old Shitamachi backstreets around Yanaka and Asakusa, and the loop around the Imperial Palace are all comfortable on a city bike or e-bike, and docked share-cycle systems sit outside most major stations.
For a fuller day out, riders head beyond the city: the coast around Kamakura, Enoshima and the Miura Peninsula, or across the bay to the Boso Peninsula in Chiba, where quiet seaside roads run out to the capes. Tokyo is also a common launch point for longer trips — several shops here rent road and touring bikes by the week for riders continuing on to Mt Fuji or the mountains.
