Takayama, in the mountains of Hida, pairs a beautifully preserved old town with easy valley riding. A bike is a pleasant way to explore the morning-market streets and merchant houses, then continue out along the Miyagawa river and into the surrounding rice-field countryside.

E-bikes are especially popular here because the region is mountainous — they make light work of the ride towards the festival town of Hida-Furukawa and the Okuhida onsen valleys near Hirayu. Rentals are available in town and at some tourist facilities; the shoulder seasons of spring and autumn are ideal, with heavy snow in winter.
