Okinawa trades Japan's temples for turquoise water, white beaches and a subtropical pace. On the main island, Naha and the coast are easy riding, while the outer Yaeyama islands — Ishigaki, Miyako and tiny Taketomi — are the real cycling gems, flat enough to loop in a day with the sea always in view.

City bikes and e-bikes are widely rented, with share-cycles in Naha and shops on the islands; Taketomi in particular is best explored by bicycle. It is rideable year-round thanks to the mild climate, though summer is hot and the island chain sees typhoons in late summer.
