Kyoto is compact, largely flat and laid out on a grid, which makes it one of the best cities in Japan to see by bike. A single day on two wheels links temples that would take hours by bus — Kinkaku-ji, Ginkaku-ji, the Kamo River path and the Arashiyama bamboo grove on the western edge — and lets you slip down side streets the buses never reach.

City bikes and e-bikes are the usual rentals, available near Kyoto Station and throughout the centre, with some shops offering guided tours and road bikes for rides into the northern hills. Note that some busy districts restrict where you can park a bicycle, so use the marked cycle parking; cherry blossom in spring and the autumn foliage are the peak — and busiest — seasons.
